Reflect on the deportation of thousands of New Yorkers every year
Pray for the families and communities destroyed in the process
Call for the Mayor to Stop Tearing them Apart
What’s happening? New York City uses YOUR tax payer dollars to help deport nearly 4,000 New Yorkers each year by working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in our jails at Rikers Island. Currently, our city government allows ICE unfettered access to our jails resulting in the deportation of long time New Yorkers who are members of our communities and our families.
Why is this important? What does it mean for our country’s soul to deport 400,000 people each year destroying families and communities in the process? As people of faith we are called to serve the stranger in our midst, speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, and lead the fight for justice. Now’s the time.
How can we help?
- Proclaim this injustice in church on Sunday, February 27 through an announcement and/or minute for mission.
- Ask congregants to sign a petition asking Mayor Bloomberg to get ICE out of Rikers Island.
- Show a brand new short film, Families Under Threat.
