New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City

Rev. Dr. Donna Schaper on the Bill O’Reilly show discussing the New Sanctuary Movement

Families Under Threat

A short video produced for the Coalition, Families Under Threat provides a brief glimpse into the sadly common immigrant experience of having a family member suddenly go missing. The video tells the stories of three immigrants facing deportation because of Secure Communities enforcement and includes commentary by Rev. Jim Wallis (a well-known evangelical Christian leader), Rev. Donna Schaper (the Coalition co-founder), and a Community Policing officer – all of whom point out the moral and practical flaws in the S-Comm program.  The video asks whether a law which tears apart a family adheres to our common values and discusses how should people of faith should respond to the moral crisis that our current immigration system presents.

Bring Jean Home Campaign

After Jean’s detention on December 30, 2009 at his regular check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Coalition mounted a huge campaign of civil disobedience, political pressure, phone-calling and letter-writing, which led to his release.  19 people were arrested, 11 of them clergy, as part of direct action demanding that the government free Jean. Although he was released from federal custody on January 23, 2010, and despite the massive deprivations in Haiti due to the lingering effects of the earthquake, Jean continues to live under the threat of deportation.
